Fall Color Report (10/27/08)

High winds and rain put an abrupt end to our Fall colors.  A few stubborn trees are refusing to give in, but they are few and far between.

Even without the bright colors, it’s the perfect time of year to golf our challenging courses and drive, bike or hike the roads and paths that wind through the quiet interior of our County.

Smelt Report (updated 9/25/08)

The 2008 Smelt Run is over and there were varied reports throughout the 2008 season:  I had heard of people getting anywhere from “7 smelt” to “more than they’ve caught in 5 or 6 years”.  It had been reported the smelt ran pretty good off of both Minnesota Point and Wisconsin Point this year.

As with nature, the “run” is really undefined but typically the smelt run between the end of April and the beginning of May. They can be found along the shores of Lake Superior and in the many rivers that flow into it.

Catching smelt is a mix of timing, patience, and a little luck.  So next spring get your nets and waders ready to try your luck at another unique opportunity our beautiful area has to offer.

Information can also be found by contacting  the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources - Superior office- for rules, regulations and licensing information, 715-392-7988, www.dnr.state.wi.us.

A SPECIAL EVENTS calendar is available: 800-942-5313, www.superiorchamber.org
