Held at the Poplar Golf Course grounds on Saturday, September 11, the day promises to hold an abundance of fun and activities for one and all.

McDougall's Dream

In the late 1800s, Captain Alexander McDougall dreamed of producing a vessel capable of transporting Lake Superior ore of iron and copper, grain from the Midwest, timber from Michigan and Great Lakes fish to fill the ever-increasing demands from around the country. Thus, began the development of the steel-hulled “whalebacks”.

This year's 6th annual fundraising event to preserve the SS Meteor Whaleback and the legacy of Captain Alexander McDougall offers new and rare tours.

McDougall’s Shipyards—How They Worked.

Dr Matthew Daley presents his current research on McDougall’s shipyards in Duluth and Superior. He will present his findings on the physical layout of the yards, the workforce, the tools and equipment they used and their impact on their communities. Dr Daley is an Associate Professor of History at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI.

The Meteor’s Machinery—A Museum within a Museum

A technical paper published in 1943 to commemorate the 50^th anniversary of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers described the machinery spaces of ships of 1893 as being “of oil squirt cans, dancing connecting rods, and sweating coal passers and firemen.” This description would have applied to all Great Lakes ships built in the early 1900’s, and to many salt water ships. Very few of these reciprocating machinery– Scotch boiler steam plants still exist intact worldwide. Fortunately, the METEOR is an exception. A visitor to her engine room will feel that the oiler just put down his squirt can, and the coal passer his shovel. Join museum volunteer and Professional Engineer Roger Pellett for an in-depth discussion of the METEOR’s antique steam machinery, its design, the way that it worked, and unique features it incorporated for operation in the freshwater environment of the Great Lakes.

SS John Ericsson—A Long and Productive Career

Elmer Engman, author of In the Belly of a Whale, leads us on a tour of the life of one of the most productive whalebacks, the JOHN ERICSSON. The ERICSSON was the next whaleback steamer to be launched after the ROCKEFELLER/SOUTH PARK/METEOR and the abundance of documentation about her will ultimately help guide parts of the restoration of the METEOR to her ROCKEFELLER era. Mr. Engman leads diving expeditions around the world, is the founder of Gales of November, and a long-time board member of Superior Public Museums which operates the METEOR.

Pat Labadie’s richly illustrated presentation will explore what influenced this remarkable man, from his youth to his experiences on the Great Lakes and overseas that would ultimately inspire him to develop revolutionary concepts for shipbuilding. Pat will discuss the evolution of the Whaleback design within the context of contemporary ships, both in the United States and abroad.

Pat Labadie is a well-known historian, speaker and writer about the Great Lakes. From 1973-2001, he was the director of Duluth’s Canal Park Marine Museum (now Lake Superior Maritime Visitors’ Center) and is currently the historian for NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuary in Alpena, MI. He was co-author of Pride of the Inland Seas, an illustrated history of the Duluth-Superior port.

Vaudeville--A Dazzling Display of Stupendous Entertainment

Before there was radio, before there was television, whether or not you understood the language in the new country to which you immigrated, whether you were rich or poor, vaudeville came to your town and entertained everyone. There were great acts, there were quirky acts, and many performed on the stage at Superior’s Palace Theatre. With the advent of the silent movies and radio along with the Great Depression, vaudeville came to an end.

But wait! You’re in luck. Even though you have available to you multi-screen theaters and every electronic entertainment device known to humankind, vaudeville is making a short, three-day return to Superior.

Burrito Union 10 Hour and 5 Hour Triathlon

Saturday, September 11, marks the fourth annual Burrito Union 5 or 10-Hour Triathlon challenging the athlete within us to compete in swimming 600 meters, on-road biking 14 miles and running a the 3.1 mile trail at Pattison State Park south of Superior.

This triathlon is poised to be the "must do" end of the year race. It’s not only going to be a great challenge, but a PARTY!

If you're not up to taking part in the triathlon itself, come on out and join the fun from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

There are three formats for the 600M Swim, 14 Mile Road Bike, 3.1 Mile Trail Run sprint course:

2-person relay (male, female, co-ed)

Each person does a full triathlon, and then tags off to teammate. You have to alternate triathlons. In other words, one person cannot do two triathlons back-to-back. Be prepared for mechanical mishaps and fatigue. If there is a mechanical problem, you will need to solve it ASAP. Be sure to pace yourself, stay hydrated and eat right so you can finish strong.

COMRADES
3-person relay (male, female, co-ed (any mix of male to female)
Each person does one segment in the triathlon. One person swims, and then tags off to biker, biker then tags off to runner. Each person HAS to do a leg in each triathlon. You can mix it up, but all three members of the team must do a segment in every triathlon.

NOTE: These rules are subject to change without regards to the democratic process. The details of the tag zone, the tagging process and other race specifics will be explained in the mandatory pre-race meeting on Friday, September 10, at 5:00 PM or 7:00 PM at Pattison State Park (one person from each team must be present).

The person/team that does the most triathlons in the 5/10-hour period wins their respective race. You can do one triathlon, stop throw some meat and potatoes on the grill, hang out w/ friends or, you can do each triathlon back-to-back. The swim course closes at the 10-hour mark. If you start the swim at 9:59 you will do one morefull triathlon. Your order of finish, plus the number of triathlons completed, will determine your overall finish.

As always, there will be great food, shirts for athletes, commemorative pint glasses, swag and awards. You won't want to miss this year's BURRITO UNION 5 & 10 HOUR TRI!

Labor Day E-Waste Collection Event

What is E-Waste? Basically “E-Waste” is an informal term for a variety of electronics that have outlived their usefulness or are beyond repair.

Some common E-Waste includes: Computers/laptops and components, televisions, stereos, telephones, answering machines, cell phones, DVDs, VCRs, scanners, copiers or fax machines.

With rapid advancements being made in electronics, it is no surprise that the use of electronic products, both privately and commercially, has grown substantially over the past two decades. According to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), Americans own approximately 24 electronic products per household. The ever-changing technology means consumers are quickly acquiring more and more electronics resulting in more and more E-Waste.

An electronic product may contain more than 1,000 different substances, some of which can be harmful to human and environmental health. If old equipment is not properly recycled, these substances could get into the air, soil and water. Some of those materials also include metals that can be recovered for future uses. More importantly, the ‘E-Cycle Wisconsin’ law banning much E-Waste from Wisconsin landfills becomes effective September 1, 2010.

From September 6 to October 1, 2010 the E-Waste Collection Center, LLC at 1020 Ogden Avenue in Superior is having a “Labor Day E-Waste Collection Event”. During the event, all E-waste recycling fees on household E-Waste recycling will be waived to ALL residents of both WI and MN.

Also, commercial customers will receive 50% off all regular recycling fees during this event. Commercial pick-ups are FREE of charge by appointment, even during this event. Professional Data Destruction is free with recycling.

Joaquin Achucarro to Perform at Northwestern High School

Maestro Joaquin Achucarrro is internationally recognized for his dazzling technique and exquisite poetic sensibility. Born in Bilbao, Spain, Mr. Achucarro displayed exceptional musical talent as a child, yet, following a family tradition of scientific pursuits, entered university to prepare for a future in physics. His love of music prevailed, however, as he took gold medals at international piano competitions such as the Gontaut Biron in Paris, the Geneva International Competition and the Viotti International Competition in Italy. His victory at the 1959 Liverpool International Competition, performing the Schumann Piano Concerto and the Rachmanioff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, led to his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra and launched his international career.

Since the beginning of that career he has performed in 60 countries, with more than 342 conductors and 200 orchestras from around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, London Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Yomiuri of Tokyo.

In his home country Mr. Achucarro has achieved the highest honors in the Arts. The Spanish government awarded him the Premio Nacional de Musica in 1992. He was knighted by King Juan Carlos I with the Gold Medal of Fine Arts in 1996. In 2003 he was presented with the Great Cross of Civil Merit honoring a lifetime of achievement. 2006 saw the 60th anniversary of his debut as a concert pianist.

And now Maestro Achucarro has agreed to perform in concert in the Patricia Luostari Theatre for the Performing Arts on September 18th in Maple, Wisconsin. The concert will begin at 8 PM. Tickets are currently on sale at Northwestern High School for this ‘once in a lifetime’ experience. Concert goers can call 715-363-2434 ext. 2000 or stop by the high school office to obtain tickets. A $50 VIP ticket will include a ‘meet and greet’ with Maestro Achucarro prior to the concert and a free CD not available through the internet or in stores. DAIP Twin Ports Hot Shots vs. Harlem Ambassadors

Harlem Ambassadors - Not Your Grandfathers Basketball Show! (but tons of fun for EVERYONE!)

Get ready for dazzling ball-handling tricks, high-flying slam dunks and hilarious family comedy as the Twin Ports Hot Shots take on the Harlem Ambassadors in a community basketball game that shoots hoops for safe youth.

Members of the Domestic Abuse Intervention Programs have scouted the Duluth/Superior area for community leaders and business owners to form an all “star” basketball team. This team will face off against the Harlem Ambassadors, a worldwide traveling show, on September 19, 2010 at 3:00 pm in the UWS Mertz gym.

The Harlem Ambassador team is comprised of individuals, many of whom are former college basketball players, who dedicate a few years of their lives traveling the world with the show. The objective is to advocate “expect respect” in all relationships, stay in school and stay off drugs. With the help of DAIP’s Twin Ports Hot Shots team the message is clear across cities, party lines or anything else: Together, we can shoot hoops for safe youth.

Each Hot Shot has fundraised to get their spot on the team. With ticket sales, the proceeds will go a long way to benefit the “VC” or more properly know as the Duluth Family Visitation Center. The VC operates within DAIP as one of its many vital programs. It is unique in that it provides a safe and supporting environment that holds an abusive parent accountable in developing a healthy relationship with their child(ren), decreases the child(ren) being exposed to violence and protects the victimized parent from further harm. The VC is currently initiating a movement to bring a transitional component forward. It will give families, shattered by domestic violence, the skills to build their new lives safely and independently.

DAIP offers domestic violence training and resources based on The Duluth Model to help community activists, domestic violence workers, practitioners in the criminal and civil justice systems, human service providers, and community leaders make a direct impact on domestic violence.

Tickets can be purchased on-line $8 or $10 at the door, children 3 and under are free.

The mission of the Harlem Ambassadors is to deliver a quality basketball show to our audiences throughout the United States and internationally. The show is designed to be fun for customers of all ages, with youngsters being awed for the first time and older folks enjoying the tried-and-true gags like a rerun of a favorite comedy movie. "No Smoking" Signs Available

WI Act 12, the recently passed smoke free air law that covers all workplaces and public places is effective as of July 5, 2010. One requirement of the law is that all businesses display no smoking signs incorporating the universal “no smoking” symbol.

The American Lung Association in WI is offering to provide these signs at no charge to all businesses that would like them. The “no smoking” sign is in the form of a 5x7 window cling that can be affixed to any glass surface. It reads “No Smoking – This is a smoke free establishment" – pursuant to Wisconsin State Statute 101.123” along with a toll free number and website to report noncompliance. The signs available for you to pick up at The Chamber (205 Belknap Street).

Home-grown and Fresh Picked

Saturday June 5th marks the kick off of the 2010 Farmers' Market season here in Superior and Douglas County. Area growers will be loading up their trucks and heading down to Barker’s Island bright and early ready to supply you with fresh fruits, tasty vegetables and so much more.

June through October you will find open-air Farmers’ Markets at various locations throughout Superior and Douglas County. The markets are held weekly rain or shine and feature fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables from the Douglas County area. In addition to locally grown produce, the markets may also offer pure maple syrup, honey, herbs, plants, jam and other condiments, baked goods, and garden crafts.

A variety of growers and vendors provide a wide selection of items that will vary from week to week all season long. Early season you should find lettuce, scallions, spinach, snap peas, asparagus, maple syrup, fruit jams, frozen apple cider, baked goods and bedding plants. In the early/mid-season you should begin to see strawberries/raspberries, tomatoes & peppers added to the mix. Later in the mid-season you may find cucumbers, corn, broccoli, green beans, potatoes and carrots. Late season onions, garlic, parsnips, squash, melons, zucchini, pumpkins and apples. With all the great things you can find, you will want to make the Farmers Markets a regular stop on your weekly shopping trips.

Adults in Douglas County, now is the time to take advantage of FREE vaccinations. All too often as adults we overlook the importance of keeping up with our vaccinations. Perhaps we can’t afford it, don’t have insurance, just plain don’t have the time or simply don't think about it without the emphasis on it like there is with children. However, as adults we often have responsibilities such as families, jobs or our education that cannot be set aside because we are sick. While there is no vaccine for a common cold, a simple vaccine can prevent you from contracting and possibly spreading things like Hepatitis A or B, Chickenpox or H1N1.

With help from a government grant, during 2010, the Douglas County Public Health Service is able to offer several common vaccinations free of charge to adults (age 18 and older) in Douglas County. These vaccines are available to all adults in Douglas County regardless of income. Proof of residency is not required. This program is also open to students being educated in Douglas County even if they don’t live in Douglas County. Those who have health insurance and access to these vaccinations are asked to see their health provider, if possible.

Douglas County Public Health Service will be offering the following vaccines FREE OF CHARGE in their office and at various dates, times and locations throughout 2010:

HPV - Human Papillomavirus, (a series of 3 shots) is now available for women and men through age 26.
Hepatitis A (series of 2 shots)
Hepatitis B (series of 3 shots)
Influenza A – H1N1
MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
Tdap or Td (Tetanus, Diptheria, Pertussis)
Varicella (Chickenpox) only available at the Douglas Coutny Public Health Service office.

Clinics will be held at multiple locations in Douglas County including the following:

Wednesday April 28th WITC Room 113 10:30am to 12:30pm
Monday May 3rd- UWS Yellow Jacket Atrium 11:00am to 1:00pm
Tuesday May 18th Mission Covenant Church in Poplar 3:00pm to 6:00pm
Wednesday May 19th Oakland Town Hall 3:00pm to 6:00pm
Thursday May 20th Gordon Town Hall 3:00pm to 6:00pm
Tuesday May 25th United Presbyterian Church in Superior 3:00pm to 6:00pm

During the year there will also be a registered nurse available to administer these vaccines at the Douglas County Public Health Service office, 1316 North 14th Street, Suite 324, Monday through Friday from 8:15 to 4:00pm, no appointment necessary.

Pro Musky Fishing in Superior September 11 & 12

September 11th & 12th the Pro Musky Tournament Trail is making a stop in Superior Wisconsin to fish the waters of the St. Louis River.

Musky Hunter’s Fall Meltdown is PMTT’s fourth and final qualifying event before the World Championships to be held on Lake Minnetonka, MN in October.

“The Professional Musky Tournament Trail events are the most high profile, exciting, educational and entertaining musky tournaments in the country.

The PMTT's high energy format has been developed not only with the Pro's in mind, but also the dozens and dozens of other excellent musky anglers who may have the desire and ability to become Pro's or just enjoy a little competition and want to have a good time. Success in the PMTT can take you down many roads, no matter what your skill level. Come join the PMTT and have fun.

Anglers have the opportunity to compete in as many qualifying events as they choose, whether it is just one event or the entire tournament trail.

The PMTT contestants will be competing for a cash and prize value that could total well over $220,000 throughout the year. With the possibility of winning over $21,000 at every event and over $40,000 in cash and prizes at the year-end Ranger Boats World Championship, the PMTT is taking musky fishing to an all time high, developing the sport and promoting musky conservation.” - Tim Widlacki, PMTT Tournament Director.

Tournament Central for Musky Hunter’s Fall Meltdown is Barker’s Island Inn & Conference Center.

Tournament is limited to 125 teams. Registration entry forms and fees are due 30 days prior to the event - don't wait, register today!

Tournament hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday with the awards presentation beginning between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Registration will take place Friday evening between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. followed by a mandatory pre-tournament meeting for all teams promptly at 7:00pm (location TBA).

Teams consist of one or two people and participants must be at least 18 years old or fish with parent or legal guardian.

Entry fee is $600 per team.

“Volunteers needed”
Groups, clubs, organizations, events, schools, hospitals, attractions… will always need volunteers. Recently we’ve seen a noticeable upswing in the number of people looking for a place to volunteer and donate their time and services. Perhaps it was “Extreme” events right here at home, the state of the nation’s economy, even worldwide disasters or a combination of things, something has stirred the desire for more people to become more involved in community and help others. However, the desire to volunteer and the need for volunteers sometimes have a tough time connecting, until now, that is. The Chamber now has available to everyone who visits our website a “volunteer bank”, a place where the need for volunteers and volunteers can connect.

Local groups, organizations and businesses alike are all welcome, free of charge, to post any volunteer opportunities that they may have, whether it is a one time opportunity during an event or an open-ended volunteer opportunity in any capacity. Keep in mind that volunteers come in all different ages and abilities, something that might not be the right fit for one person might be perfect for someone else so consider all possibilities as opportunities.

To those seeking volunteer options, if you don’t see something that interests you, check back often, once word spreads more and more opportunities will be posted.

From planting trees, pulling weeds, set-up/tear-down, greeting, filing, reading, mentoring, tutoring, to serving on a committee and everywhere in between, there is someone willing to lend a hand - don’t be afraid to ask for one.
